Each complete application packet is reviewed independently by all members of the Fund to determine eligibility and completeness.

Applicants will be notified of their status in early May. Payment is contingent on receipt of documentation of satisfactory completion of units and grades. The high schools of graduating seniors will be notified of their awards.

Amounts:

The amount of a scholarship will depend upon the student's need, the number of qualified applicants and the funds available for the year.

In 2010, the following scholarship levels are available:

  • College Scholarships: Horticultural Scholarship—$5,000 (new 2008-09)
  • Outstanding Named Scholar $4000 and up
  • College or University and Named Scholars $3000-$3500 minimum
  • Junior College –full time (12-15 units) $2000 minimum
  • Junior College-part time (9 –11 units) $1500 minimum

Several continuing endowed scholarships (such as the Baxter, Dettner and Kroninger Awards) are given to exceptional candidates. In 2009-10 the Fund awarded $80,000 to 30 deserving scholars.

Payments:

Scholarships are paid directly to the student in two or three installments, following the pattern of the school's semesters or quarters. The first check is sent in the Fall after the Scholarship Fund has received official documentation of the number of units in which the student has enrolled.

The second payment is made after the Fall grades and second session's registration schedule are received by the Fund. At those schools on the quarter system, this procedure is repeated for the last third of the scholarship.

Sierra Dierkes 2009 Scholar

If a student drops a course and completes less than 12 units in a session he/she will not qualify for the second session installment of the scholarship. It is the student's responsibility to notify the Fund of any changes which could affect scholarship eligibility.
